Doesn’t this picture bring back memories?
I wasn’t much of a reader but I remember seeing Golden Books at school and people’s houses. I don’t recall having any at home – plus, with 3 older brothers – I’d probably get beat up if I was caught reading them.
But I secretly read a couple – or at least looked at the pictures. But at first glance of the gold binding, I immediately knew what they were.
Do you remember these:

Do you remember reading Golden Books when you were growing up? Which titles do your remember? Did you make them available for your children? Do you still have some lying around the house to pass on to future generations?

dkohana suggested a blog topic about favorite elementary school books and how exciting it was when the Scholastic book order was delivered to the classroom.
Me, I wasn’t much of a reader. The only books I ordered from Scholastic were joke books – go figure.
But I do remember a couple of favorites from the elementary school library. Of course, The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. I always thought that the Dr. Seuss characters were so playful looking.
Another favorite was the The Five Chinese Brothers.

Remember the brother who swallowed the sea?

And other story I remember from small kid time – although it wasn’t a book from elementary school – was Momotaro. We had the book at home and again I enjoyed looking at the cartoon drawings. The peach, the baby in the peach, and the dog with the samurai armor, the pheasant, and the monkey! How cool would it be to have a monkey!

What favorite story books from small kid time do you remember? Paula mentioned one that I’ve never heard of: Ramona the Pest. How about series books, like The Hardy Boys, or Nancy Drew? Share your memories with us.
And once again – thanks for the blog topic suggestion, dkohana.

It’s mid-August. There are just a couple of weeks left of summer. It’s time to start stressing about going back to school. But first, it means a trip to Ala Moana Center for a day of back-to-school shopping!
So here’s your Thursday 3 questions:
- Where did you do your back-to-school shopping?
- Did you have a say in what you wore or did your mom or dad just pick out stuff for you?
- Do you remember what you used to wear?
Here’s my replies:

- Where did you do your back-to-school shopping?
I remember Sears. My mom used to pick one day in August and tell us “we’re going shopping tomorrow”. That meant back-to-school shopping and eating lunch at the mall! This was elementary time so my mom just picked out my clothes. I was just looking forward to eating someplace at the mall.
- Did you have a say in what you wore or did your mom or dad just pick out stuff for you?
During my elementary school years, I mostly had hand-me-downs. I remember that I wanted shirt that could button all the up so my mom sewed on buttons and made button holes on the hand-me-down shirts just so I’d be happy – and she wouldn’t have to buy new shirts just for me. As for pants length – that’s a different story…
- Do you remember what you used to wear?
In the 7th grade, Hang Ten shirts were in style so I was able to get a couple Hang Ten pull over striped tees. And bell-bottoms. I also remember picking out a couple of long sleeve dress shirts from Holiday Mart. They had big puffy sleeves and three button cuffs on the wrists. If I wore a vest, I would’ve looked like one of the Three Musketeers. But I thought I looked cool. LOL
Okay, your turn to answer the back-to-school questions. And feel free to include other memories of shopping for back-to-school clothes. Or shoes. Or school supplies, books, etc.
