Thursday 3 – Makin’ Music
Jan 25, 2012
Since we’re on a high from JindoMaster808‘s excellent guest blog post (Big MLC Mahalo once again, JM808), I thought we’d do a Thursday 3 about Makin’ Music.
Copy and paste the 3 questions and answer them or just answer them by number, order, whatever. And don’t forget to leave any comments, stories, memories, etc. relating to the topic. So, with a one, and a two, and a three…
- If you woke up one morning and had the magical ability to play, I mean really jam, any musical instrument – what instrument would you choose? And why?
- If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument?
- What’s your take on music?
Here’s my replies:
- If you woke up one morning and had the magical ability to play, I mean really jam, any musical instrument – what instrument would you choose? And why?
In my younger days, I would’ve liked to play the electric guitar – like Eddie van Halen. But now, in my MLC age, I’d choose the saxophone. To me, the sound of the sax is both sexy and soulful. The way the notes have the ability to blend together. How you can almost feel your passion through the music that you play – like it’s an extension of your soul. Now that’s Makin’ Music. - If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument?
Since my brother had a guitar, I tried to learn how to play it. Didn’t happen. I think with my short and stubby Okinawan fingers – it just wasn’t meant to be. In high school, I tried taking a few slack-key guitar lessons. Nope. Nada. Nuttin’. I even tried the harmonica. No go. Then it dawned on me – even if I knew how to play something, if I’m simply not musically inclined – it wouldn’t sound good anyway (which leads me to question #3). - What’s your take on music?
Since Makin’ Music was so hard for me, I gained an appreciation for music. It’s so amazing to me that individual instruments making all different sounds can come together and produce something so beautiful in harmony. And when I’m tired, stressed, or just need to relax – music calms me down. And one of my biggest loves for music is how it can transport me back in time and trigger my memories to when I used to hear that song. In fact, it still does that to me today. For example, a couple of times when we were playing at the Main Street casino, this song was playing in the background. I heard it although I wasn’t really listening to it – I’m guessing that my subconscious was soaking it all in – and the song was suddenly burned into my memory. So of course whenever I hear this song now, I remember sitting at the poker machine at the Main Street casino, relaxed and having fun.

Drums… I wish I could play the drums, unfortunately, I can’t keep a beat… 5 thumbs on both hands… tried playing uke, even took lessons (UH nite class with Herb Ohta)… after a while I dropped out… Listening to music is best for me!
If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument?
Uke… now that I have a lot of time on my hands, I should try to learn… just lost interest because of my musical abilities…
What’s your take on music?
I still like oldies from 50′s and 60′s, even big band music… but learning to appreciate the music of present times… like to relax to smooth jazz… I exercise listening to oldies… I used to stay at the Stardust alot… nites would gamble by the lounge, listening to small bands… use to make money there, too bad it’s gone, just like my money… took ballroom dancing, but found out I have 2 left feet… but it’s fun!

1. Piano. Because it’s still the one instrument that mesmerizes me whenever I watch and listen to someone who really knows how to play it.
2. By the fourth grade, I had developed a knack for playing the ukulele. Anyone remember watching those ukulele classes on educational/public tv in school? At 15, I learned to play the guitar that my uncle gave to me. Around the same time I learned to play the harmonica, bass, piano, and drums. I basically play by ear but wish I had taken formal piano lessons. Today I have an ukulele and an old acoustic guitar I still play on occasion. I also have a Yamaha Motif ES8 keyboard that I tinker with rarely.
3. Listening to music is still a big part of my life although I have to admit it’s been more of a challenge for me to appreciate music released since the 2000′s. Like a lot of old people, I think music was “better” back when.

2) I played bass in a rock band in high school…why pick that one
Only has four strings
..and I love the deep, deep resonance of the notes. I listen for the bass notes in a song, higher priority than lyrics or the rhythm. That’s the reason why all of my cars had an elaborate audio system in them *BOOM* *BOOM* before it became so popular in the late ’90s on.
This is one of my favorite bass songs, by Santana:

In my younger days, I wanted to play the piano, but now? the saxophone.. just love the sound
2.If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument?
Used to play the ukelele only becuz that was mandatory in 7th grade, then dad went out to buy us one. But wished I kept playing.
3.What’s your take on music?
I love music, its the universal language for all cultures. I am a Motown, R& B, soul music 70′s all the way. But I do like 60′s and 50′s music.

1. Piano. My mother-in-law bought our daughter a piano and gave her $1K for her first few piano lessons. She played the piano all through high school, then quit, preferring to play soccer and basketball instead. I miss hearing her play relaxing music on our piano for us.
2. I have never played a musical instrument unless you count the tonette which was required in music class.
3. I appreciate listening to music. Music relaxes me. I love to listen to easy listening music when I iron or clean house. Makes a task fun!

3) I love music….I haven’t met a song that I didn’t like….except for cow moooosic, head banging and RAP. As the decades progressed from the ’60 onward, each one had its merits..Viet Nam era, Motown, disco, cow mooosic, bad hair bands…my SM had a hand in educating me to the late ’80s music and to listen to the lyrics…they always tell a story…I still practice that to this day.
My current genre is alternative music…if you have my copies of the TRIAD mix CDs, you’ll know what I mean. When my kids were teenagers in the late ’90s early ’00 they got me hooked on it as I was always out voted on what station/cd to listen to in the car. Some of the lyrics…outstanding
I still listen to classic rock songs, they’ve been around for 45+ years and its not going away soon…it’ll be around for another 45+ years, not sure if many of us will be around then
This is another song, by Christina Perri, I’d like to learn to play on the piano…one that I hit the repeat button often in my car…..just listen to the lyrics…
http://youtu.be/rtOvBOTyX00
You’re never too old to listen to the current music…just ask Sally…

If you woke up one morning and had the magical ability to play, I mean really jam, any musical instrument – what instrument would you choose? And why?
I’d like to be able to play guitar to play slack key. But, aue, fingers too short!
If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument?
I taught myself to play ‘ukulele in my 20′s so I could accompany my singing Hawaiian songs.
What’s your take on music?
I do like a wide range of music – folk music of different countries, a bit of country, big band, etc. But I wouldn’t give one cent for rap or much of the popular music (?) since about the mid 60′s! Guess I’m just an old fut.

Thank you @Rodney for the opportunity to write for MLC. @volleymom2, your comment, “I love music, its the universal language for all cultures,” is so true. The Honolulu Community Concert Band and Omiya City Community Band will perform this Saturday. We’ll also play a couple of pieces as a combined band.
Some of us in HCCB speak Japanese, but most of us don’t. Yet when we play, our music will transcend differences in language and cultures. I feel very blessed to have this opportunity.

1.If you woke up one morning and had the magical ability to play, I mean really jam, any musical instrument – what instrument would you choose? And why? Probably piano, with guitar a close second. My cousin is still the best piano player I know personally, and I’ve heard her make music on it for the last 40 years – she’s terrific. But I know a lot of great acoustic guitar players that I’m jealous of.
2.If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument? `Ukulele. When I was in 4th grade, all kids in public school learned how to play a little bit on it. I just never stopped. It’s a great comfort to me, and a great form of meditation – unless I’m performing (which is very unusual), playing is very calming.
3.What’s your take on music? I love music – it’s a daily part of my life. One of the reasons I knew Sweetie was the right one for me was he not only knew about an obscure song I liked, he knew who had written it and he knew alternate verses I didn’t know.

In HS I wanted to play the electric guitar, then later an acoustic guitar to play slack key and now the ukulele.
2.If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument?
I no play any instruments and I wish I did.
3.What’s your take on music?
Very relaxing, if the radio is not on at work, I would have a harder time making it though the day.

1. Being a creative virtuoso on any instrument would be a dream. I can’t imagine the feeling a Ravi Shankar, or Yo-Yo Ma is having while on their instrument. Most of us can only listen and go with the flow which is a ride you can enjoy but who wouldn’t mind driving once in a while.
2. Fooled around w/ukulele and guitar but aiyah, that musical gene is nowhere to be found.
3. Enjoying music is universal…but what is music to one may be noise to another. My recently retired co-worker had distinct musical taste – loved Sinatra and hated rap/hard rock. I grew up listening to aunty’s 45′s…elvis, robin luke; then came the Beatles, Stones in high school; and Jefferson Airplane, Sonny Boy Williamson and Sunday Manoa in army and UH. From there till now I got into all kinds of music from classical to folk to punk to 3rd world. Love listening to Rimi Natsukawa, Blue Hearts, Vienna Teng, Ralph Stanley, Adele, Tuva throat singing, whatevahs…good music takes many forms.

1. I would seriously trade any talent or skill that I now have to be able to not only play, but create, real music. I’d like to be able to play the guitar for the shallow reason that anyone on earth is several percentage points cooler when jamming on a guitar.
2. I played piano from grade school until sometime during high school. The instrument was picked for me, probably because we already owned it. I guess you would say I was technically competent but my heart was never in it nor did I really have a true talent.
3. Not very original, but I’m just going to quote NIetzsche: “Without music, life would be a mistake.”

Music was an important part of “Criminal Minds” last night. I don’t know if this quote from the show is based on fact or not: “Our hormonal surges as teenagers may make the choices seem more personal and passionate, and later on in life we might experiment with other musical selections. But no music ever impacts us as much as that we listen to at age 14″ – but it rings true to me.
14 for me was 1972 – I took a look at a Top 100 list for that year, and this would explain why I can remember all the words to what I now realize are truly horrible songs (there are some good ones in there too).

1. Piano. I admire someone at a piano bar playing a variety of tunes. Wish I could do that.
2. I have no talent for playing an instrument.
3. Like dihudfan, I enjoy music from the 50s/60s and big band stuff from the 30s/40s. Also, (although many hated it) I enjoyed disco music and other stuff from the 70s (my clubbing days). I like some stuff from the 80s; less stuff from the 90s; and almost nothing beyond 2000. As Rod said, music brings back memories of certain events and I enjoy reminiscing.

Regarding definition of alternative music, think of music listened by our youth that is not mainstream so it depends if it has mass appeal or not…anyhow, that is how I would define it. In the 80′s I listened to Norm Winter’s Radio Free Hawaii that played a lot of “alternative” music that wasn’t on mainstream top 40 radio stations such as Bob Marley and Nirvana but then reggae and grunge got mass popular so no longer alternative?

Many of the TV shows today incorporate today’s music into their story lines. If you remember watching Dawson’s Creek or Smallville, every episode would introduce songs that were popular during that time and songs from unknown artists. That’s how I became a fan of Jann Arden, Sophie Hawkins, Sophie Zelmani, Beth Nielsen Chapman, Mindy Smith, Chantal Kreviazuk, Michelle Featherstone, Vast and Jewel. Grey’s Anatomy, Glee, One Tree Hill are other shows that use current music scores on their show.
If you watch their season DVDs, you may notice that the music content is slightly different from their original TV broadcast version due to licensing issues. The studios didn’t include rights for future DVD versions when they originally negotiated the TV licensing rights….too costly now.

Acoustic guitar. For me it would be the most versatile and portable, ready to go at a moments notice at a party, can accompany with singing, can be accompanied by a whole bunch of friends on other instruments. Can also cruise alone at home… like my neighbor does.

If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument?
I played violin in 5th and 6th grade. I fake it the entire first year and got caught. The teacher took the time to teach me how to read music and then it all made sense to me. Don’t know why I didn’t want to continue when we got to Kaimuki Inter. Now that I see musicians like the ladies of Bond, I so wish I had paid more attention.
Oh, btw, I didn’t choose it. We took some kind of test and they picked those of us who the results said were “musically inclined”. I remember the teacher telling me I was always the one bopping my head and tapping my toes. LOL not much diff from what I do now.

What’s your take on music?
Me? I really admire people who can cruise and snooze on music. I enjoy music too. But working out at the gym and sucking up the vapors in the steam room afterwards does a better job for me. Nothing beats a good sweat and getting your endorphins to give you a ‘natrual high’.
Music does bring me back in time. I remember when we were young. Mom used to watch Lawrence Welk, and how she would adore her Englebert Humperdinck album. But it doesn’t end there. I can still hear the Chinese albums going in the background and taking them back to their motherland. They were so happy.
My first stereo in the car was a Pioneer. Used to pound that buggah and show it off so the girls would hear it. Heheheh, I don’t have a Pioneer anymore, but I still pound the car stereo once in a while. When the good-lookin’ girls turn their heads, I laugh when they find out it’s an old man acting juvenile. LOL
Used to like the piped-in music when I work. Back in the days, it was the KUMU station — ala elevator music. And when an often-played tune was recognized, more better had me the karaoke mike. Lately, I’ve been watching TV more than listening to music to relax. The TV gives me a more hypnotic effect and, actually, tells me when it’s time to go to la-la land.
I know there’s a handful of Lanakila alums. Remember Mrs. Ikeoka? That was the 5th grade teacher who taught us music. I still remember C7, G7, F on the ukulele. Or ‘my dog has fleas’. But other than being our music instructor, that wahine sure was a bag of hot air. I think yelling was something that came normal to her. Yikes!

What’s your take on music?
Music is everything. It emotes. It heals. It loves. It soothes. I will listen to almost anything. Almost. Not into Rap, Gangsta, and songs with profanity and violence. I could itemize all genres and why they rock my world but it would just be too long. Suffice it to say that music makes my world go ’round.

@ankles said “Many of the TV shows today incorporate today’s music into their story lines.” You remember when that started – Miami Vice. Before that, I don’t think there were any scripted shows that spent the big bucks on music licensing.
I liked how the music was integrated into Cold Case. Since they were cold cases (duh LOL) they used music from whatever year in the past the crime took place. I used to hate when they’d do a story with a not-so-cold case and the music was less than 3 years old!

happy birthday sally!
If you woke up one morning and had the magical ability to play, I mean really jam, any musical instrument – what instrument would you choose? And why?
I think I’d like to play the piano or guitar or maybe the ukulele. I love when people can just pick up their instrument and start singing a song! (of course, kind of hard to do that with a piano! lol.)
If you used to or still do play a musical instrument, what made you choose that specific musical instrument?
I used to play the clarinet… not sure why I choose it, other than the fact that – at the time – most girls played the flute or clarinet and I did not feel “girly” enough to play a flute.
I’d like to get back to playing it one of these days!
What’s your take on music?
I love music! I used to listen to my brother’s new albums (70′s) with him – he’d be so excited when he brought them home. Later, I’d be the same way with my cassettes and CDs! More recently, I hadn’t been much into buying music for myself but now I’m just getting into ITunes! (yes, a little late but I had been trying to avoid buying music… lol.) I also love hearing live music and going to concerts and musicals – you really cannot beat a live performance! Music can instantaneously transport you back to a memorable time in your life. It can change your mood, it can change your life.

@snow – Eric graduated in our class. But I don’t know him. My friends in band knows him. Who would’ve guessed how he would turn out? Amazing! Our class president went on to Harvard Law School. Then quit his day job. Turns out he’s doing some kind of sports agent thing to bring China players to the U.S. He played a part in the Yao Ming and Houston Rockets deal.
How many more years till retirement for us?

You don’t want to blind the band with the shine off my Yul Brenner head…..they might start playing cow moooooosic
I just found a box full of mint condition vinyl albums from the ’80s, mostly “bad hair band”…they haven’t seen the light of day in over 17+ years….I’m really going to have to get serious about picking up a USB turntable soon….

If you woke up one morning and had the magical ability to play, I mean really jam, any musical instrument – what instrument would you choose? And why?
I was going to say the electric guitar too, but that would require me to grow my hair long. It just look dorky for a bass or ‘lectric guitar player to have a G.I. special, ala buzz cut. Don’t think I’m cut out to do drums. Those guys, they make all kind faces when they jam. Case in point, Mr. Buddy Rich.
So I am going to be different and say lead singer. No musical instrument for the lead singer. The way I see it, if you’re vocal cords are your most valuable asset, then hire a band.
This is who I want to emulate (see the link below). His voice is golden and he has something most of us can only dream of — his youth. Someone at Lexus is a spitting image of him. I always poke fun and call him David. Hey, to each its own.

@ankles – Shoots, missed him the last year when he came down at Hard Rock. It was date night with Mrs. S, but kids got sick at the last minute. Figured if David was eye-candy for the women, then it’ll definitely be easy on the eyes for me to look at the audience (good-lookin’ guys stick with good-lookin’ chicks). LOL

You should have some t-shirts made up saying “Seawalker’s Band“, wear it when out shopping (without the Missus of course)…instant groupies
The results would be infinitely better than borrowing my grandson on a shopping trip….

One of these days, @LK, you’re going to hit it. Good things happen to those who do good deeds. Just remember, winner throws party for the rest of the MLC stiffs. I know, couldn’t even get through to the lines. Same here. But nothing ventured, nothing gained.

@ankles – Was that a sea of Pakes I saw among the orchestra? Well, then, yours truly would fit right in. Imagine this kanaka Pake strumming his ukulele among the brass section. “My doggy has fleas.” The wahine has a pretty nice voice too. Food, it does the body good. But music, it does wonders for the brain.
