Thursday 3 – Christmas Shopping

Dec 5, 2013

With Thanksgiving behind us, it’s officially Christmas season.  And that means – Shopping!  So how about a Thursday 3 of Christmas Shopping!

  1. Did you dare to venture out on Black Friday for some Christmas Shopping?
  2. Are you done with your Christmas Shopping?
  3. Christmas Shopping – Love it or Hate it?

black-friday

Here’s my replies:

  1. Did you dare to venture out on Black Friday for some Christmas Shopping?
We just so happened to be in San Francisco on Black Friday.  We ventured out on Thursday night.  The Macy’s across Union Square was packed from the 8:00PM opening.  And since S.F. charges you a dime for each bag, nobody uses a bag.  So people were walking our of the store and along the streets holding toaster overs, pillows, comforters, etc.  It almost looked like people were looting the store!  H&M had a midnight opening.  They were packed too.
But back to Macy’s.  If you’ve never been there – it’s beautiful.  The store takes up the whole block and is 6 to 8 stories high!  I went in there looking for the men’s department and guess what – there isn’t one.  The Macy’s men’s store is across the street!  Not quite as big – but a good 4 or 6 floors of goods!  Makes Kahala Macy’s Men’s store look like a 7-11.  And Union Square had an ice skating rink going on while the sidewalks had street performers, panhandlers, Apple-Pickers, crazies, police – lots of police – mostly talking story and trying to keep warm.  It was quite an experience.  Reminded me of New Year’s Eve.
  2. Are you done with your Christmas Shopping?
Not even close…  Luckily, we don’t have too many to shop for anymore.  But still – to find the right gift is the challenge.
  3. Christmas Shopping – Love it or Hate it?
Did I ever mention that I love to shop?  Especially when I have an idea of what I’m looking for.  It’s when I don’t know what to look for is when shopping becomes a chore.  And the worst part is after a full shopping session – with a ton of bags in your hands – you realize that nothing that you bought is for Christmas presents.  It was mostly good deals that you found for yourself!  Then you go out the next day and try again.

Ooh, aah, oh-wow!  Your turn to answer the Thursday 3 – Christmas Shopping.  And feel free to leave any Christmas Shopping memories.

Somewhat. Did some shopping that night after work, but of course, the ‘door buster specials’ were done.
2.Are you done with your Christmas Shopping?
Nope. The better half prefers to do it (does not like my choices).
3.Christmas Shopping – Love it or Hate it?
I love shopping in general. It does not have to be Christmas time.

Did you dare to venture out on Black Friday for some Christmas Shopping? Yes, we hit Old Navy and Bath and Body around 11 pm than was out at 7 the next morning and hit Walmart, Crazy shirts, The Face Shop and Brooke stone. I put off Costco until Sunday and it was pouring rain.

While I was in college I worked in retail at Ala Moana at several different stores. Christmas time was the best, the stores were busy so time would just fly by. I did gift wrapping a couple of seasons at Liberty House and Sears, I would see all the gifts coming in and if I saw something I liked I would ask the customer where exactly in the store did they get it from, than on my 10 minute break I would run out and go pick it up. Sometimes I would spend my whole paycheck at work.

Does anyone remember Guava Lane where McInerny used to be? There were all these little shops within the big store. I worked at the GBC store in there and would get discounts at some of the other places. I got all my Christmas shopping done that year while I was working.

LOL! Are you kidding me? Nosirree, Bob. No way, Jose. Don’t get me wrong – I like shopping (especially for toys and do dads for myself), but I do not like crowds. Not at all, not one bit. No, no, no! LOL!

I remember about two-years ago, though. I had just accomplished the move to my condo. The move had been a serious downsizing effort. By the time I got around to unpacking and setting up the laptop (one of the last things in the unpacking/get organized effort), it was something like the day before Thanksgiving (this was when stores typically didn’t open on Thanksgiving – imagine that!). Imagine my chagrin when it refused to boot! It was old and it was time to replace anyway, but the timing could not have been worse.

I was anxious to get it replaced and did not want to wait for it to arrive via mail (there was no Comp USA anymore, too!). Plus, how was I going to order it? My laptop was dead! LOL. So, I ended up venturing out that particular Black Friday to the Iwilei Best Buy. I purposely went around 2 p.m. in an effort to avoid the main surge of the crowd. It was still pretty packed, but not totally insane. I told myself that if I went there and would have to circle the parking lot for parking, I would just give up and come home. I had to go to the upstairs parking, but found a decent parking spot without much effort. The laptop selection was limited and the one I ended up with was not even one with “Black Friday Pricing”. It must have, though, taken something like 20-minutes to checkout. All-in-all, not a totally unbearable experience. LOL.

In general, I tend to value my time and not having to deal with crowds more than a “super sale price”. Plus, the stuff that I want is normally not on “sale”.

    2. Are you done with your Christmas Shopping?

    Yup! :)

    3. Christmas Shopping – Love it or Hate it?

Like Rod, I tend to end up buying stuff for myself, so I like that part! ;)

I use to think it was a chore, didn’t hate it but it was something you had to do. But this year I have Amazon Prime so shipping is free, can purchase great deals from the comfort of home and get it delivered to my door. I plan to do most of my shopping online.

@Masako: Guava Lane! (forgot about that place) I thought it was a real neat place with a variety of artsy stuff, jewelry, and shops like Hermes and Harrods…and Hobby Company upstairs! Was kinda sad Guava Lane closed.

    1. Did you dare to venture out on Black Friday for some Christmas Shopping? Me being Pupule of course lol. Just not this year I didnt.

    2. Are you done with your Christmas Shopping? Nope alot of my shopping is online this year. Im getting alot of stuff that you can only get in Hawai’i or in Asia for ohana here that you can’t get in Portland. Like good crackseed(half brother and me, mother) lol.

    3. Christmas Shopping – Love it or Hate it? I just love it. More so when I was younger, when my keiki was very young(spoiled dat girl lol) Alot less presents to get now and fewer people to shop for.

Christmas shopping was a ritual of buying mint hotcoco or apple cider, eatting out for that day and listening to christmas music in the car.

@Rodney, Macy’s across Union Square on Black Friday Auwee lol, I can imagine that was quite an experience for a person from Hawai’i lol? I lived about a year in San Francisco and felt the same way.

@Rodney, do you remember that Ala Moana had a small ice skateing rink every year at Christmas time in the 70s? I belive it was in J.C. Pennys or the big store way on the other end of the mall from Sears? It was funny watching Hawai’i kids try to ice skate like me lol. :-).

    Good Morning All.

1- I do not go out on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I used to work in retail and feel sorry for the employees that have to put up with that crowd and working hours.

2- I am just baking this year. Bought all my supplies and ingredients. Now to find the time to make everything. Cookies and breads.

3- I hate shopping. Sometimes I will go to the stores just to walk around. Otherwise it will be sitting and watching TV. I have a hard time justifying to myself how much I spend on stuff I do not need, just want.

Did you dare to venture out on Black Friday for some Christmas Shopping? I usually don’t, but I did this year. Went out mostly because there was a second Record Store Day (special sales for independent record stores) specials and because had to buy certain gifts for people we were going to see on Sunday.

Are you done with your Christmas Shopping? Nope. I always start early (usually start with a few days after Christmas for next year’s Christmas), but I’m never done early. But I have about 90% of my shopping done, with good ideas for 8% of the rest. The remaining 2% – auwe.

Christmas Shopping – Love it or Hate it? Love it when I can find the perfect gift for a reasonable price. But getting ideas can be really hard. I’m the queen of catalog shopping – I should make a sacrifice to the tree gods for the amount of paper that comes in the mail. My favorite new website for all kind of gift ideas: Fab.com. New items all the time, price ranges from “you’ve got to be kidding” to “wow, even I can afford that.”

    2. Done with xmas shopping.

    @Lowtone123 – The Christmas Wishbook!

I also remember what seemed to be a HUGE toy section in the Ala Moana Sears.

The big kid in me is missing Toys-n-Joys (Kaimuki) already.

Santa Claus parades were the bomb cause you could get free candy!

Feeling up and shaking all your gifts under the Christmas Tree before Christmas in an effort to figure out what they were. You always especially targeted the gift from certain people because you knew they always got you something good (i.e., NOT clothes! LOL).

    @volleymom2

It wasn’t a ice skating rink ran by the mall. It was a synthetic ice rink, a very small setup in Liberty House or another major department store(not sears). The store also every year did some Disney land promotional thing where you could pan for gold, meet goofy, mickey etc etc.

    @Everyone

Anyone remember the mainstage of the Ala Moana mail was almost right next to the sandbox and During Christmas you could meet santa and watch a cool huge puppet show? Wow sometimes it feels like yesterday but was 1970s.

Sorry – this is totally OT.

But – LOL, Woo hoo!!! I finally made it down to Zippy’s and back on my Solowheel this morning! It’s been a little over three-months now. Range is somewhat limited, probably due to the rather steady, good-sized incline where I live, but it will work for me. I would like more range, but, WTH, good enough, for now.

New model supposed to be out next year – hopefully, it will have a little more range. But, the thing is still pretty awesome . . . . ;)

I get a lot of strange, puzzled looks from people I pass by on the sidewalk . . . . LOL.
