Mmm, You Smell Good
Ahh, doesn’t every guy like to hear that?
My friend L.S. was working in the fragrance department when she noticed that One Direction has a perfume. And it’s only $49.50. One Direction – that’s a boy-band, right?
Anyway, she said that times sure have changed since “Charlie” and “Jean Nate“.
Got me thinking of old perfumes and colognes. The classic that I remember is:
Zen by Shiseido. This was the perfume that girls used to wear to socials. I remember smelling it when slow dancing with them. Then later during the nightclub scene, this girl who used to hang out with us used a perfume called Ciara. Nice musky scent with a light floral tone.
I was introduced to colognes at an early age – since my older brothers had them. And of course when they weren’t home, I played around with them. I believe I was in the 7th grade when I started using colognes. I used to spray them directly on my Hang Ten shirts. Then I wondered why my shirt were getting all these little holes in them. I wasn’t until I leaned that some colognes eat up the cotton shirts that I put two and two together and realized that the holes in my shirts were from the cologne. Oops.
But back to my brother’s colognes – naturally there was Brut in the famous green bottle.
That brother also had a cologne called Jade East. That one I liked. I wonder if I can still find it…
My other brother had the popular English Leather that had the wooden cap. And I also messed around with his British Sterling. When he went into the Army, I automatically inherited his colognes. I also recall him having a bottle of Old Spice. And I remember someone getting a gift box of Hai-Karate that I ended up with.
I remember having a cologne called Zizanie. I think it too was one of those that I got from my brother. Anyway, just for the hell of it, I looked it up on the internet about 2 months ago and I was able to get a bottle! Ah, the memories that the scent brought back. The best way that I can describe the scent is “powdery”. It’s been around since 1932. Word is that Frank Sinatra used to wear it.
But one of the best colognes that I had during high school was something I picked up at The Shoppe. It was called Macho and came in a frosted bottle. There were a few different flavors but the one that I liked was “Crimson“. It was a very fruity scent – which was big back in the 70′s. I’ve search high and low for this cologne but it’s just a memory. About the closest thing I can find to it is Escape for Men by Calvin Klein. But even that one isn’t “fruity” enough.
Another cologne that I loved but can’t find anymore is Andron by Jovan. I see a couple bottles on ebay, but they’re going for over $125. I think I bought my bottle at Holiday Mart. I think it was discontinued because it used actual pheromones from animals.
But speaking of Jovan. A must for when we were in high school was Jovan Musk. That familiar orange cologne with a scent that lasted all day long! I’d still use it today, but Paula doesn’t like the musk fragrances.
Here’s a funny story. Back when we were in high school, my friend’s mom bought us all the same Christmas present – Aramis cologne. And on Christmas night when we all got together at my friends house – each and every one of us came in reeking of Aramis. But you know what? That’s one of my top 10 favorite colognes.
And finally, my parents weren’t ones to wear fragrances. All my dad had was a bottle of Mennen Skin Bracer that he used to slap on his face every now and then. And my mom received as a gift, a bottle of Nishiki by Shiseido. It was a teeny tiny bottle with maybe only about 1/8 of an ounce of perfume in it. It was very concentrated, but it smelled so good. I used to sneak a whiff every now and then. That is yet another fragrance that’s become just a memory.
What kind of fragrances did you have back in the day? Did you ever consider getting some of your favorites again today – if it’s still available? As I’ll be looking for a bottle of Jade East in the coming days. What kind of fragrances do you use today? Do you remember the old stuff like Strawberry oils or Patchouli oils? Share your stories and memories with us.
We have another Magic Mushroom gig coming up in November.
