Do You Remember… Youth Unlimited

Apr 24, 2011

Today we have a guest blogger.  Please welcome MLC’s own: Kathi.

A few posts ago, Kathi had mentioned that she used to be a writer for Youth Unlimited.  I’m sure you all remember Youth Unlimited, right?  That familiar yellow tabloid.  I used to pick mine up weekly at the Holiday Mart record department.  And I used to collect them too.  Wish I still had them…

So without further ado, here’s Kathi’s take on Youth Unlimited.

***

Youth Unlimited

Now that print media has become an endangered species, it’s almost unreal to think that at one time Honolulu not only had two major daily newspapers, it had two more free newspapers targeted specifically to young people of high school and college age — Youth Unlimited and Split Second.

Both of them started in the early ’70s — I can’t remember exactly when, but I’m thinking it’s around the time that two things happened that had a major effect on our young lives. The voting age was lowered to 18 in 1971, and the drinking age in Hawaii was lowered to 18 in 1972. So of course, we should also have our own newspapers. Or something like that. I “discovered” both newspapers sometime during intermediate school. I liked Split Second slightly better. So I ended up writing for Youth Unlimited during high school. I’m not sure exactly how that happened.

Back then, I thought I was going to be a journalist. If you wanted to be a journalist in the mid-70s, you wanted to be Woodward or Bernstein and live “All the President’s Men.” Or at least that is what you told your parents and teachers. Because you secretly wanted to be Cameron Crowe, writing for Rolling Stone at age 15, or Bob Greene, on the road with Alice Cooper. Oh, that was just me? Well, moving on, then! Whether I was to bring down a president or follow rock stars around the country, it still seemed like a good idea to supplement my school newspaper experience with something additional, and that is where YU came in.

I have a feeling that the “youth newspaper” was a Hawaii-only thing. When I tried to describe YU to my mainland college friends, I’d get a lot of confused looks because they were familiar with neighborhood newspapers or entertainment newspapers, but nothing that was specifically geared towards young people. The confusion grew to epic proportions when I mentioned that among other things, these newspapers covered the doings of various social clubs — another thing that did not exist in their worlds.

The social clubs were a big part of YU. I’m sure many MLCers remember Jeremiah’s Club Corner, which featured a different social club in each issue. If it seems that we featured more girls’ clubs than guys’ clubs, it is probably because our photographers (at least during the time I was there) were all male. The club profiles were mostly written by the clubs themselves, no interviewing skills required on our staff’s part. I remember being a little disappointed to find that out!

The owners of YU were also involved heavily in event promotion, and the offices were above M.A.D. Music, so entertainment and music coverage was another mainstay. Between the events and the music store, I think I met almost everyone who ever played in a nightclub band in the ’70s. I also got to review a few concerts for the paper: War and the Eagles are two that I remember. Our regular music reviewer was not happy that I got the War tickets. I believe his exact words were “But she knows nothing about music!” You would know his name, since he grew up to be the co-founder and CEO of a major online service. Another event that I really enjoyed covering was the 50th State Fair in 1974: the year Kikaida was there. Yes, I know, a little too old for Kikaida by then. I still regret not getting a photo with him. Don’t judge me!

In addition to the social club beat and music reviews, I also wrote some “romantic fiction.” Again, don’t judge me. The stories came from real-life bad dates and unrequited crushes, both my own and that of my friends. So if you were one of my bad dates in high school, thank you for the inspiration! This stuff did not go into my portfolio or I would have probably not been accepted to any journalism schools.

As we all know now, I didn’t end up in journalism at all. But I enjoyed my time at YU and still enjoy writing, or at least blogging. I saved only a few issues of YU — some may still be in hiding at my parents’ house, but the rest went missing in a long-ago move. If you have any, please scan and share with MLC!

Big mahalo to Kathi for being my guest blogger and taking the time to share your memories of Youth Unlimited with us.

And MLCers, please visit Kathi’s blog too.  Just click on Rottweilers Ate My Laptop.  And bookmark it too (or you can always click on Kathi’s blog in my blogroll).  Kathi is more techie than me!

Kathi: thank you for your contribution today. I have never heard of YU. Was busy working, attending UH and raising a toddler, no spare tme for anything else. I do remember Kikaida. My little girl was 2 years old in 1974 and she had her own Kikaida doll.

Awesome contribution kathi! Someone from YU (not sure if owner or other employee) really liked our club and always called us to do promo stuff… ie FREE LABOR. hahaha I recall working a soda booth at some carnival.

Also recall taking a Christmas pic on a firetruck at King’s Alley in Waikiki. I think one of my club girls still has that issue. If she does, I’ll surely scan it and forward to Rod to forward to you.

Our club was not affiliated with the Y or YBA so we were never listed in Jeremiah’s. One of my patients, however, brought hers to show me. So cool to still have those things.

IIRC, Youth Unlimited also had a column on dances that were happening around town: Kaimuki gym, Manoa gym, Nuuanu Y, etc. And the latest happenings with the bands such as Greenwood, forgotten dynasty, Funny Company, Sounds of Innocence.
    * It was in that column that I read that “forgotten dynasty” was purposely spelled all in lower case.

I didn’t know such things existed. I find it pretty amazing, considering the work that would be involved in putting together a paper publication.

Looking at it, I’m guessing the current era equivalent of this, would be a zine.

@Rod, thanks so much for giving me the opportunity to guest post here on your great blog :)
@LK, I could not quite bring myself to buy a Kikaida doll… ermm… action figure… back then, or more recently when I was ordering other stuff from Toys N Joys online.
@sally, I actually remember that fire truck pic! Although I think that might have been before I started at YU. Would be so great if your friend still has the issue – thanks for looking!
@DiO, so many things are different thanks (or sometimes no thanks) to the internet. You can start up a ‘zine or a blog and get your message out now with a very low cost of entry, which you sure couldn’t do with a print publication then or now.

I remember seeing the Youth Unlimited paper in the Vinyl Donut and Mescalito head shop. I didn’t read it too often as much as I did Sun Bums( at least I think that’s what it was called). Sun Bums had more of the local rock scene ( think of Uncle Leo’s rock and roll road show).

    April 25th, 2011 at 8:17 am #

@Rodney: We had a get together at my parent’s house the other day and I looked through stuff in my old bedroom closet. Among other old things were several issues of Youth Unlimited from ’72 through ’75. I tried to find a picture of a fire truck in a December issue, but didn’t have one.
It was neat seeing articles on social clubs, Jeremiah’s Club Corner, High Boards of Liberty House and JC Penney’s, high school sports, song charts, and other topics of the day. There were some social clubs with people from Castle and Kailua, some you may know.
What was also interesting was seeing ads from Otaheite, ‘Country Closet’ (I think) at Arakawa’s, and one from Hartfield’s that advertised a girl’s top for something like $6.00 and pants for $7.50.
Over the next couple days, when time allows, I’ll send you some scans. Only thing is the issues were quite thick with a lot packed in, but I’ll try. I have to figure out a way to fit the pages onto my scanner.

Can’t say I remember YU newsletters. I think the MLCers in the height of the disco-era and social clubs will probably be more in tuned. But I do remember reading the Eye-Ai magazine and the all-intelligent wrestling mags. I also remember Kikaida and his bruddah, 01.

Mark’75 – Big THANK YOU!! for supplying the image of YU’s front page for this post!! No rush obviously on anything you can get to me, whenever you can is fine.

Sally – Very cool that you found the fire truck pic!! I grew up to be a firefighter’s wife so that pic is cool to me on several levels.

Mike in Waipio – I definitely remember Sunbums also!

Seawalker – I haven’t really written much fiction, romantic or otherwise, since… probably the YU days! I really was not very good. I still have a couple of unfinished short stories tucked away but they are more of a supernatural/horror/fantasy theme. And funny you should mention Playboy. When the magazine was based in Chicago and before they took production in house, I did typesetting for it at several places that I worked. The most memorable was when I was on night shift with a very religious woman who refused to typeset anything even the slightest bit racy. So she would do the stereo equipment reviews and I would be stuck with everything else for that night!

One thing I learned from way back when dad took me to McKinley football games was that TRADITION abounds. @Rod – Will try, will try. Need to put in a full day of work of Sat. It’s not Thurs. that I’m worried about, it’s Mon. BTW, the no-no reply came back rather quick. Oh well…

@Kathi – I believe the War concert that you reviewed for Youth Unlimited was the one held on December 7, 1974 at the HIC (now Blaisdell) Arena. Rodney had a copy of the advertisement for that concert in one of his previous blogs. The music editor at Youth Unlimited at that time was Steve Case, the Punahou graduate who later became the CEO and Chairman of America Online.

@Rodney – Kathi mentioned another publication at that time named “Split Second”. I believe Robin Kimura of Greenwood and Mary Ann Changg of the all girl group Rock Candy contributed to that publication. Mary did quite a bit of the photography work. There was also somebody named Dun who did quite a few of the dances featuring the local groups at that time. Maybe Robin could be a “guest blogger” at some future date.

@Steve – Greenwood’s Robin Kimura!?! Wow, he never told me. I’d better hit him up on being an MLC guest blogger (after the 70′s Nightclub Reunion is pau).

BIG, BIG thank you!!! to Mark’75!! Thanks to him, there were a whole lot of YU memories waiting in my email box for me this morning :) I’ve asked permission to put them in a gallery for all to see.

DiO: Mr. Sison retired the year before I took printshop so I unfortunately did not get the privilege to learn from him. That is where I ended up once I figured out I was not a writer – I’ve been employed in some type of print production ever after.

Steve: Yup, that’s the concert! Also… I went to Punahou from kindergarten to 3rd grade and Steve C. was one of my classmates all four of those years :)

    Guud morning MLCers!
I got my feeling back in my left leg and I can walk without crutches. I fell twice last night and it’s sore even with medication.

    Good Morning All.

Like KAN said, I think this never made it out to the boonies. We had a record store in Wahiawa. But I do not remember seeing this. Maybe I am too young…. :) just kidding.
I do not remember older siblings reading this either.

@Rodney – I had an old copy of “Split Second” and in the front of the publication, they would list the people who worked on the contents. There was someone named Robin Kimura and I assumed it must be Robin from Greenwood because of his extensive knowledge of the music scene in Hawaii. I hope that I have not confused him with another Robin Kimura.

Also, that is the War poster I was thinking of. I noticed that Kathi confirmed that it was the concert that she reviewed for Youth Unlimited.

Good evening everyone from Las Vegas! KAN: thank you for your good wishes. Yesterday I won on Treasure Chest poker, got the treasure chest 3 times. Wish I could guess better, I chose 140 coins, 140 coins and 500 coins. Played some back into the machine but cashed out $120. Today we went to Sahara and I won $420 in less than 10 min. on the Triple Lucky machine. I won big 3 spins in a row. Then we went back to the California Hotel and with my first $20 and a couple of spins I won $1,604.24 on the penny machine. That’s in the safe now and is going back to HI with us. I will be in the California Hotel’s magazine this quarter!

ankles: sorry I’m missing tonight’s party! Have fun everyone!

M: wishing you a speedy recovery.

DIO: internet service for 24 hours is $10 so this will probably be my last post. Our daughter said she had to skype with her boyfriend so we got internet for 24 hrs.

I won over $2K today. So I’m entering contests now, taking a break. We see the LION KING show tomorrow at the Mandalay Bay Hotel such a large and beautiful hotel. Saw a $100 slot machine there. Who can afford such a machine???

Tomorrow I’m playing here alone since hubby and Lynne are going shopping at Trader Joe’s and wherever else! Today we walked for hours, enough exercise for me for a week!

Linda: No need to worry about the lack of internet, or the price of internet. Frankly, you should NOT be checking in from Vegas, unless it is to say you just became the richest muumuu wearing wahine in the history of Vegas.
