Christmas is Here!

Dec 2, 2013

I hope that everyone had a safe and fun Thanksgiving holiday. And now that Thanksgiving is over, it can only mean one thing – that it’s time for…

The obligatory Christmas Music blog entry!

Me, I’m feeling a bit nostalgic this Christmas.

The Carpenters at Christmas (1977) – Complete show

The MLC Christmas anthem.  I think we can all relate to this song…

This one takes me back to a time of Peace, Love, and Flower Power.

Are you feeling nostalgic this Christmas?  What Christmas songs take you back to simpler days – when Christmas used to take forever to get here.   *remember, don’t list more than 2 links per comment or it’ll be held up as possible spam

Thanksgiving came late this year.  Let’s get the Christmas ball rolling!

M the early bird caught the FIRST worm!

I feel like I’m extra nostalgic this Christmas. I’m reaching a milestone age next year, and I’m re-connecting with a lot of my high school friends. One sent her oldest to the University of Washington this fall, so Sweetie and I had dinner with her a couple of times while they were relocating her son. Talking with a friend who moved to Sweden who always goes back to Hawai`i for Christmas (and who wouldn’t!) Another friend who’s been in California for over almost three decades with one employer is changing jobs. I’m trying to stress less this Christmas. I resolve to do this each year, with varying degrees of success.

Enough soapboxing. Unlike my friend in Sweden, this isn’t happening for me this year.

As a band geek, I guess it would only be fitting to say that the songs that bring back those memories would be Leroy Anderson’ s “A Christmas Festival” and “Sleigh Ride”. When I started playing music in intermediate school, I would always hear the ninth grade band play these two tunes during the Christmas season and couldn’t wait to play it. Then when I finally got to ninth grade we rehearsed it even before Thansgiving arrived and performed it at concerts at shopping centers and the surrounding elementary schools. Never performed ita gain while in school, but til this day it’s just not Christmas until I hear some school band perform these two songs at some shopping mall.

Yikes! Christmas time already? I swear – it seems to come quicker and quicker each year! LOL. Plus, it’s a short shopping season this year. :( LOL – can you say, “First world problem”?

For me, it would seem that the older I get, the “Scroogier” I get. LOL. Don’t get me wrong – I like the Christmas spirit, but do not care for the over commercialization. I try to stay away from the shopping centers as much as possible, especially during peak times. I absolutely refuse to do the Black Friday thingy and now there is even a Brown Thursday? LOL – forget about it! More first world problems – it seems that Ala Moana is going to be absolutely nuts for the next two Christmas shopping seasons, what with all the construction. I mean, it was already pretty crazy WITHOUT the Christmas rush! Maybe it’s time to put resources into cyber-shopping? LOL.

Okay, ‘nuf ranting. That Carpenter’s at Christmas is a fine post – just one link and like 50 minutes worth of tunes!

I find myself feeling a bit nostalgic lately, but I don’t think it’s because of Christmas. At any rate, the Christmas tunes that have caught my attention the last few years have been the jazz renditions associated with Charlie Brown Christmases.

The Jim Martinez Trio, music from “A Charlie Brown Christmas”:

    BTW, @72view – I remember playing Anderson’s “A Christmas Festival” in band! :)

These two songs remind me of being in our family station wagon and going to the gas station when I was a kid. SIGH…how did the year manage to slip by so quickly, AGAIN?

There are many Christmas songs in different genres that I love, but this one brings on the warm/fuzzies.

72view’s mention of Sleigh Ride takes me back to Kaimuki Inter, sitting in Mr. Nakamura’s math class, hearing Band practicing their Christmas songs. Curtis Z had the honor of doing the final “horse” sound on trumpet and I waited to hear it every day.

To this day, I think of Curtis Z every time I hear this song. And every class reunion, we all wonder where the heck did he go cuz no one has seen nor heard from him since graduation.

    But I digress… lol

I’m not a huge fan of pop Christmas songs, so it has to be something special to grab my attention. First time I heard this one, I thought it was so pretty.

One of my faves overall is O Holy Night, esp when sung by Willie K.
I think the great majority of us remembers the chicken skin when we first heard it, and still get chicken skin every time after that.
