MLC Christmas Gift Ideas

Dec 17, 2012

Time is running out!  It’s about a week until the jolly man in the red suit arrives.  And if you’re still looking for gifts for family or friends, you’d better get cracking on the Christmas shopping.

But just in case, maybe we can share gift ideas amongst us.

For the guy, how about Jack Black Beard Lube.  I tried a sample of this and it’s awesome.  It gave me a very close shave as it contains shave oil, shave cream, and a moisturizer so there isn’t the need to put on pre-shave or post-shave lotions.  Available at Nordstrom.  (If you go there, ask for Dale).

Feeling nostalgic?  Of course you are – that’s why you’re reading this blog!  How about some Brut.  But not the Brut Splash-on stuff that comes in the plastic bottle.  I’m talking about Brut Classic.  The one with the chain and badge on the bottle.  And it does have the original fragrance to it whereas the newer Brut doesn’t.  Available at the Perfumes 4 U or Perfumania stores and other fragrance shops.

And for the ladies… How about some Clinique Aromatics Elixir body wash.  It has a nice fragrance to it.  Paula likes it as much as I do – although I don’t use it – because you know, it’s for girls.  Available from Macy’s.

And since the guys have Brut, it’s only fair that the girls get Zen.  Remember Zen perfume by Shiseido?  Yes guys, you can still get your girl some Zen perfume at Macy’s.

Wow, just think.  The guys can put on some Brut while the girls spray on some Zen.  Throw on the Best of Bread LP and it’ll be just like slow dancing at a “social”.  (All together now – - – “Awwww…”).

And if all else fails – there is always gift cards.  Boring – but it’s something.  And it’s practical.  *Until January 1, 2013 – buy a $25 Jamba Juice gift card and receive a free Jamba Juice.  Actually, you receive a certificate for a free Jamba Juice so you can buy 4 cards at once and not have to drink the 4 free Jamba Juices all at one time.

Okay, that should be enough to get you started.  What other kind of gift ideas do you have to share?  To me, the best gift is something that the recipient would want to have, but not bad enough to buy it for themselves – so if they received it as a gift – Perfect!

Those Jamba cards are great Go-To gift for Grab Bag or stocking stuffer. I’ll never complain about getting my Orange Dream Machine for free!

    Hey Rod,

Good memories. When I was a kid, I remember buying grandpa a bottle of Shiseido Bravas hair tonic and Old Spice. Grandma had to lend financial assistance because as I recall that stuff was expensive…I’m talking about the Bravas.

Luckily my dad had cheaper tastes, Vitalis and Hai Karate.

“…the best gift is something that the recipient would want to have, but not bad enough to buy it for themselves – so if they received it as a gift – Perfect!”

…or can’t afford to buy it for themselves?

Like… an iPad Mini? or an iPhone 5? *woot woot!* What about getting BOTH?!

My daddy always got Old Spice. Looking back, I cannot recall him using it, don’t recall a “scent” on him. But he was always happy to get it. I think he only used the after-shave.

Can I first say “thank you” to Sally for something she didn’t know she did?

I was at the dentist last Wednesday for my dreaded annual dental xrays. I hate and dread dental xrays. I was watching my dentist’s receptionists handle a million-and-one interruptions, questions, charts, phone calls, and people and they were calm, cheerful, and polite. I thought “It takes a special person to work in a dental office,” and all of a sudden, I thought of Sally, and the thought of her made me smile and relax. I honestly think Sally helped me get through my crisis (and I still have no cavities)! Thanks Sally.

Here’s what I got some of my friends who no longer live in Hawai`i: The Hawaii Book of Rice. Plus, if I remember correctly (no guarantee, MLC), proceeds go to the Hawaii Food Bank. http://bookshawaii.net/hawaii-book-of-rice.html

@KAN – Thanks for the gift ideas! I like THINKGEEK. That’s where I got my STFUniversity t-shirt. Except their shipping to Hawaii costs and arm and a leg.

And I just found out that Woot.com now ships to Hawaii! Not sure how much it costs though.

Gift Cards – people have to eat and buy stuff….Best Buy, iTunes, Amazon, Olive Garden/Red Lobster/Black Angus/Starbucks :-) Panda Express had a deal where you buy $25 and a two entree meal was free.

Fry’s grocery store – buy a gift card and it’s worth 4 times the face value in fuel points….when’s the last time you spent $1.11/gal on gas :?:

The best stocking stuffers are Lottery Scratchers tickets. Been buying them every year for my kids and most times break even or better.

No chance of a ZR-1 under my tree this year so I asked my kids for a winning Powerball ticket….they are all getting married in the next few months…one is tomorrow :!:

Have a great day :!:

Thanks for all the helpful tips :!: Going to Longs to buy some Longs gift cards today for my family. If you subcribe to the CVS care card you get cash back after several purchases, saves a lot of money. I also get Starbucks gift cards which can be used on the mainland too! You can buy sandwiches there too so I know my broke college students can grab a meal at Starbucks if they need to do so :!:

Yesterday our computer screen tilted to the left so I have to tilt my head to look at it now. Hinted to hubby this morning to buy me another computer for Christmas. However, when we turned on our Sony TV this morning it went kaput! Called our Sony TV repairman (91boz), says he can come out on Wed. to try to repair it but the part needed was unavailable. Ok, Santa new computer or new TV, I’m not fussy, either one will do :!:

@Linda, my computer went down last week so I’m using my laptop. Masako’s computer went down Saturday, yes we each have our own desktop computer, but I purchased 2 computers on Black Friday for Christmas so Masako got her Christmas present early. I’m waiting before I setup my new one. I might return it and get a better one for myself since I setup Masako’s one, not that hers is junk, it’s good but I want better. hahaha

Senator Inouye will be greatly missed. He was the pride of all Japanese-Americans in Hawaii. I remember my Baban talking about how he used to come over to visit when he was going to high school with my uncle.

@KAN: Wow, what a compliment! I must tell you, it is challenging sometimes to hold it all together. Lucky for me, my patients are like family. When I have 2 walking up, one walking in, two lines ringing, one with new insurance, one with a serious medical update, and I REALLY need a bathroom break… everybody just waits their turn and ends up talking stories.

What else can you do but smile?

    But I digress… LOL!

Vintage gifts: I got a Pet Rock once and kept it until just a few short years ago.

@Mark’75 – I’m not sure when Brut turned to plastic bottles, but that’s all that’s found in the department stores. And it doesn’t smell the same at Brut Classic.

    Aramis is still around too!

Each year we tell our kids to write down five things that they want for Christmas. They might get 1 in the case of my daughter who asked for all expensive stuff or this year my son gets all 5 because his request were not as big. Another tradition I have with the kids is we go to Old Navy since they both like old Navy stuff and I get then a load of stuff and wrap each one individually so they have lots to open on Christmas day.

Every year on the second or third weekend in December our kitchen turns into a commercial bakery. This year was pretty simple, I did one batch of cookies, 24 rum cake loafs and four different kinds of chex mixes. I usually do only one kind of chex mix but my mother in law was making some with furukake so I decided to try that with both splenda and real sugar. I tried a peanut butter one that didn’t come out good so I ended up putting the furukake sauce on it and rebaking it, than I did my usual sister in laws recipe.
I usually do more cookies but this year I tried my mom’s spritz recipe which she used to make like 15 batches. Each cookie is pressed out of a cookie gun and decorated with sprinkles. I was exhausted after 1 batch. I don’t know how she used to do it.

Yes, this year was easy compared other years, but it’s still hard work. So our Bakery Shop is closed for the year until next December when it opens again for a day.

Masako: That is such a great idea to have your children list the 5 things they want for Christmas. Will have our children do that for next Christmas. I already gave them money to go buy what they want for this Christmas. I’ll do that for my niece’s children as well. She has little ones and I never know what they want each year. It’s great to share thoughts here. We learn so much from each other. Thanks, everyone :!:

I admire people like Masako & M who have the patience to bake during the holidays. I commissioned my friend to bake stuff for my office since nothing good can come of my baking during December – I’m too frazzled. God bless the good cooks and bakers of the world.
