Happy MLC New Year

Colourful 2014 in fiery sparklers

Happy MLC New Year!

I hope that everyone has a safe and healthy 2014.  And thank you everyone for participating in the MLC blog.  Even if you’re just a “lurker” and don’t comment – thank you too!  As long as you keep reading, I’ll keep writing.

Now, without using the “R” word (Resolution) – what are you planning to do in 2014?  No commitments here.  Just thoughts and plans for the new year.

For me, I plan to eat healthier and lose some weight as my blood pressure is starting to creep back up again.  And start exercising a little bit more.  Try to get the heart beating faster and working up a sweat – at least once a week.

Shopping less and doing more yard work.  The weeds are winning.

Clear out the 10 boxes of crap that I brought home from when the Advertiser closed.  What was that – 3 years ago!?!

Convert some of my favorite records into mp3 files.

Okay, that’s all I have.  What’s your plans?  Remember – no commitments.

Once again – HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

Surf more, work less. Have fun. Bike ride the Pacific Beach boardwalk even more, to watch more sunsets and green flashes. It’s very calming. Travel and take towsands of pics all across our great land! Downsize, start having garage sales and sell on C’list to get rid of all of dis junk so I can fit my house. lol

Eat better, work out more. Keep reminding myself to be more laid back, cool, easy going like it was living in Hawai’i. Save money so at least I can visit home sometime soon. Never forget the unique time growing up in Hawai’i.

eh Rodney, how you going convert albums to mp3? u get one usb turntable and conversion software? I just retired starting today and like u brought home 10 boxes of my personal junk including boxes of old albums and cassettes that I stored at work (cooler and less humidity) and I don’t have a record player anymore so might purchase a turntable to plug into computer.

This going be one different year with no full time job so plan to work on yard (weeds won long time ago), neglected home projects and many clean and organize tasks. Spend quality time with wife who has recovered nicely from cancer. Play more tennis, continue to run and get stronger. And perhaps do more freelance work and heat press/screen printing.

    Happy New Year!

Good morning, MLCers :!: Happy Wednesday :!: Happy New Year :!:  Today is my son’s 31st birthday; he is presently serving with the Hawaii Army National Guard in Afghanistan until 6/2014…. they keep extending his stay. His mission is to assist with closing down the military bases there. He is a gunner on a helicopter (spooky). Prayers sent daily that he will return home safely to us this summer.

@hamajang: Congratulations on your retirement! I played for 3 years before we began seriously to renovate and clean our home. I brought home 3 boxes of Labor Dept. notes (in case I went back to help…. ha! ha! ha!) Never! I’m shredding my files in 2014! Too busy flying to Vegas 5 times last year…. our next trip will be a long one 2/12-2/24/14. Our daughter will be on a 2 week break from medical school and we are buying her a car for her internship; in addition to playing in the casinos too :!:

Here’s wishing everyone good health and much happiness in 2014 :!: Enjoy each day for it’s own special qualities :!:

Resolution: To lose 30 more pounds. I lost 32 pounds in 2013 and my clothes fit so much more comfortably now :!: I did it by eating half the portion size I normally ate, now I am accustomed to eating small portions. This year I will exercise more :!: Goal is to fit into a bathing suit once again…. if I can accomplish that by summer, we plan to join our niece on a trip to the BIG ISLAND to swim there :!:  Nice to have goals :!:

Have the best year ever everyone :!:

I don’t make resolutions, my plan is a work in progress and, I must say, I’ve been doing okay. Always room for improvement and more discipline but it’s better than before.

Judging from what friends are saying, purging seems to be what we all want to do. Getting rid of things that are no longer useful nor meaningful really feels good.

My experience on this is that it cannot be done all at one time like they do on TV. IRL, things are different.

Happy New Year, everyone! Wishing you all success in YOUR plans!

    Happy New Year!
I thought of the Spirit song and George Orwell book “1984”…I remember hearing the song, reading the book…and at the time thinking 1984 to be far in the future.
My wife and I “survived” two sides of our families for separate Christmas and New Year’s gatherings…lots of grand-nieces and nephews everywhere. Lots of fun but pooped us out. and back to work tomorrow.
About Treetops Restaurant: I sometimes play basketball with the owner/main guy at Treetops as well as the owner of the property. The main guy will be taking a break to take care of some health stuff. I’ll miss the great jai he made for Chinese New Year’s every year. But Treetops will remain open per the property owner, not sure who exactly will be running it.
I’m hoping to lose a few pounds and get healthier, clean up/simplify at home, come to more clarity about my years of work leading to retirement, and continue to enjoy friends, family, and music as the essentials of life. Wishing all a great 2014!

@Mark’75: 32 lbs. sounds like a lot but when one is extremely overweight only my doctor noticed the difference and complimented me! Good job! I was never overweight in high school, only in later years when my job involved sitting for 8 hours typing on a computer and talking on the phone. Only my mouth and fingers exercised, unfortunately not enough to lose any weight! Another 30 lbs. would really make me look a lot better so that is my goal for 2014!

We have lots of things to give away again in 2014, dishes, and household things…. I’ve been donating it to a family of 9 struggling to make ends meet…. paying it forward again…. good things come back to me, many times over in Vegas :!:

We finished cleaning and upgrading 2 bathrooms and our master bedroom, looks wonderful! There is something very relaxing about a very clean and neat home! Hoping to get to the rest of the house, one room at a time so it is not so overwhelming. Lots of crapola (things one owns but really don’t need) that one accumulates over the years! Takes awhile deciding what to keep, what to give away, and what to toss out. Not so easy! But will get more organized in 2014!

Have a healthy and happy year everyone! Life is short, make it sweet :!:

@hemajang – Congratulations on your retirement! You’ve paid your dues and now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labor!

There is a turntable made by Ion that has USB plugs built into it, but it’s a belt driven turntable. I wanted a direct-drive turntable so I got one also made by Ion. But it didn’t have the USB connections. So I bought this piece called iMic. It plugs in to the turntable RCA jacks on one side and has a USB connector on the other side. I used it once and it works like a charm. If you have an old reliable turntable, the iMic is all you need to convert it.

Thanks for MLC through the years, Rod–sometimes I have fun “catching up” enjoying past MLC topics & shared memories.

Yup, Ige’s in Pearl City is closing fo’ real. I promise NOT to do this here often: January 10th will be a special night at Ige’s, celebrating the New Year and also 10 years of Ige’s “Flashback Fridays” with classic rock, pop, soul, and plenty dance music from the 60s, especially 70s, and 80s with RKSB (Royal Kunia Street Band). This is an open invitation for all MLC’ers to come and sing along, dance, talk story, grind, and drink as we ride/dance down memory lane at Ige’s “Together” one last time.

RKSB will also be at The Crown (formerly Hard Rock Cafe across HI Convention Center) on 1/17/14 as The Crown hopes to get it’s own Flashback Fridays going into 2014. Hope someone shows up there too. Okay, the plug is pau. Happy New Year, All, & thanks again Rod!!

Aloha!….cmo….I have been a visitor to Paradise Park since it first opened in 1967. And the Treetops Restaurant. My family has enjoyed it for years. Our Nazarene Church has had group church functions at Treetops for years. And the food was always totally awesome! Started hiking Manoa Falls at just 12 years old. Before I could even afford a meal at Treetops! But I always knew how totally awesome it was! I always missed Paradise Park when it closed! It still has a very special place, in my heart!

    Aloha!

@dihudfan – Our Star-Adv comes in long plastic bags which are great for picking up the dog’s kaka. Pick ‘um up, tie a knot, then ready to pick up the next mess. Sometimes can fit up to 4 pick-ups. If you’re newspaper doesn’t come in the plastic bag – request it!

The plastic bags! LOL! I used to deliver on my bicycle the “Mid Week” once per week newspaper in Kahala. It was a once per week free newspaper. But I would walk door to door and ask for payments, as they told me to. We had no plastic bags. The Mid Week gave me stubs, to give to those families that were willing to pay. I earned enough money to by my first 9′ 10″ Duke Kahanamoku surfboard that summer! And I shook the Dukes hand, and talked story, at our Wigwam Store sale on Dillingham Blvd, about 1967. Thanks Dad! I will never forget it!

    Hey, Mark–
Agreed–we do live in a special, special place. I remember taking my nephew and nieces to the dinosaur exhibit at Paradise Park close to when they were going to close. The Treetops and Paradise Park area reminds me of a jungle–you expect dinosaurs and or at least lions and tigers to come out of the trees.
Yes, that’s the Ige’s that you found that RKSB will be playing at for last time next Friday. It’s sad that another local business will shut down, there is no other place like Ige’s for the great local food (spare ribs, fried rice, stew, andage, Hawaiian plate…) AND a friendly place for LIVE music and dancing.

Rod–we’ll do a mini America song medley if you and Pam show up as I read in past posts that’s one of your favorite bands. RKSB is pretty low-key, not much flyers or pictures of the band but we’re pretty good at bringing back memories and we have some of “secret weapon” ace musicians in the band. Some of the Greenwood guys will probably show up as well as other musicians from other local bands to join the celebration of/at Ige’s. RKSB (Royal Kunia Street Band) has a few videos on You Tube that other people posted including a medley of “I Will Always Think About You/Can’t Find the Time”, “My Angel Baby”, “Slippery When It’s Wet”, “Shake Your Booty”, “Ladies Night/Get Down On It”, and “My Hawaii” all on You Tube.
Oh boy, broke my first New Year’s resolution already (plugging away, someone gave me permission–ha). If any MLC’ers show up at Ige’s, come say hello to the wannabe guitar guy.
